In the beginning of the last three press conferences held by Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has been very quick to decline the rumours that Facebook is about to launch a mobile phone. Is it just creating a buzz or is Facebook soon to launch “the social one” phone?
Another rumour going around is that when (yes I believe it’s ‘when’ and not ‘if’) Google are going to launch Nexus two, it’s not going to be with the last partner HTC, but with Samsung.
Last night I attended the annual Mobile Awards in Copenhagen, and during the break, I ran into an executive from one of the terminal providers (no names here). I started the discussion about the Facebook phone by saying – “I think they (Facebook) will be launching a phone, it just makes senses”. I couldn’t help notice the little grin on his face when he said, “I don’t think they are going to make the terminal themselves”. I tried to dig a bit deeper, but he just continued to smile that overbearing smile – I know and I am not going to tell you any more.
With Zuckerberg’s constant denying, Facebook’s latest launch of Messages and their focus on Places and Deals, the fact that Google might not be developing their next phone with HTC plus my conversation last night makes me pretty convinced that Facebook is going to launch a mobile together with one of the larger terminal providers in the beginning of next year.
Taking Facebook´s latest focus for development into account – creating a platform for business on Facebook Places, Deals, and the launch of the new social inbox they call Messages – just makes it even more relevant and a logical next step.
I am looking forward to try out the Facebook mobile when it hits the market.
Do you think it’s all a storm in a glass of water – or do you think Facebook is going to launch a phone?
