Update From SXSW in Austin, Texas

Iben LarsenGuest blog written by Iben Larsen, who is a cultural anthropologist and MA in Media Science, based in Copenhagen. She’s passionate about entrepreneurship, networking, personal and professionel development. You can follow her on Twitter at @ibeniben.

Thanks to Stig Lommer’s Scholarship and DRRB, this year will take Iben around the world to do research and interviews with stakeholders within social media. This has brought her to California and later on Hong Kong and South Korea to learn from the fastest moving cultures, when it comes to linking social media and technology. Currently, she is at the South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas, from where she is blogging for Mindjumpers.

Howdy from SXSW in Austin, Texas!Howdy from SXSW in Austin, Texas! Mashable, 4Chan, GroupMe, Frog Design and loads and loads of other social media brands are present here – not to mention all the researchers, entrepreneurs, journalists – and basically the whole new media industry is here. Austin has turned into a gift shop of talks, tradeshows, networking and so many free parties, concerts and BBQ’s that no living soul can RSVP to all of them!

It is hectic, and wonderful and none of the people I have talked to have had an overview. I haven’t either, but am just trying to go with the flow. Everywhere people are walking around with their new iPad 2, which they purchased after waiting in a very long line next to Apple’s pop-up store this Saturday. The sale is still on and Apple said that they won’t close before they sold out, but it could be a matter of just a few days.

While standing in the line, a friend of mine got to network  with a guy from Skype and another one, I believe from Mashable, so after they had all purchased their iPads they went celebrating all night long at ”The Driskill’ – the nicest boutique hotel in the city, where some SXSW talks also take place. The topics this year: Companies becoming more philantropic – examples of giveaways in the form of services and other stuff, revitalizing brands such as Old Spice and Pepsi, entrepreneurship, location-based services and how they have only just begun unfolding the potential of using collective data etc.  Foursquare launched a new edition JUST before SXSW.

Tomorrow, I’m meeting with a Danish start-up company called Memolane (see blog post about Memolane here) and I will tell you more after my interview with them. Here, you can see some pictures I have taken at the conference.

Why Customised Content is (still) growing

Our computers are getting faster and stronger and according to Moore’s law their processing power will double every year from now on. This means that we are experiencing a consistent and ever increasing amount of information, data and images when we are online. We acknowledge some of it – but ignore most. Consequently customised content has become key in today’s marketing.
