Two days ago, Diet Pepsi launched a new commercial, which features Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. The ad aired during an episode of NBC’s Chuck, and it features Sofia who is trying to clear the beach in Santa Monica in order to pick up a Diet Pepsi.
At first, Sofia showed up in a Diet Pepsi print ad for the new skinny can, which wasn’t received very well. Afterwards, we saw Beckham in a video where he was kicking long balls on the beach – and that one doesn’t seem to have reached the intended purpose either.
However, now we get to see Vergara and Beckham together in this TV commercial, where Vergara makes everyone run away from the line to get a Pepsi by tweeting that Beckham is at the pier. Thus, inspired by Twitter, we get a bit of insight into the use of social media – and that’s what I think makes this commercial from Pepsi a bit more interesting than the other ones.
This ad for Diet Pepsi is very simple and funny. It shows good understanding of consumer behavior at the same time as it says something about the use of the social network Twitter. People are connected – and we get to see how the role of digital media has been integrated into our lives. Social media has an effect.
