You may remember Youtube’s user-generated film project called Life in a Day which I wrote about earlier this summer. More than 80,000 entries of footage from 197 different countries were submitted to Youtube – all recorded by people on the 24th of July to document this day and to show the rest of the world a glimpse of their life.
As a smart way of showing all the footage, Youtube has created an online interactive gallery on their channel. The vast amount of footage can be sorted by different tags that show different moods and atmospheres. Also you there are different ways to display the videos in the gallery – you can see them as a sphere, a matrix or by geo-tags.
This is a smart and interesting way for Youtube to display the many videos. Lately there have been many innovative uses of Youtube that shows the potential of their platform. For instance, the new viral campaign ’A Hunter Shoots a Bear ” was an excellent way of doing something interactive.
Director Kevin Macdonald is still editing the most compelling submissions to go into a documentary film, which is produced by Ridley Scott. More videos will be added to the gallery as the director and his team review the videos.
The film will premiere at the Sundance Festival and on Youtube in January 2011.
