Often when I talk to people about social media, people keep saying: Why do I need to use social media – isn’t it just a buzzword?
No, it is not just a buzzword. As I see it, social media is just a natural outcome of the way in which society is moving. Well, of course you can also define it as a buzzword being hyped a certain way like many other new phenomena on its way into the more mainstream. But to me, the social media buzz is definitely not pure empty talk.
Get on board
With society now being a service society and technically advanced where we spend a lot of time in front of the computer producing and handling information, I think it is a natural development that digital media has become social too. In that sense social media are ”just” the technical tools that facilitate social interaction with one another – something that mankind has always done. Let’s not forget that humans are social beings, and I don’t think that will change. This also makes me believe that social media are here to stay and will only become more powerful as people and new generations get more and more used to handling digital media. Therefore I see no reason why people should opt out on social media, because it is “just a buzzword”.
So just my personal opinion: rather get on board now, than being lost in the digital landscape 5, 10 or 20 years from now.
What the F**k is Social Media Now?
Having these opinions, I would like to show you this presentation compiled by Marta Kagan, who is managing director at the marketing agency Espresso. The presentation argues that we no longer need to question what social media is, but rather what social media is now. We have simply moved beyond the discussion of whether social media justified to talk about.
Facebook has just hit the mark of 500 million users, and more than half of the world’s population has never known a life without the internet. Therefore now, it makes increasingly more sense to discuss how social media is evolving.
Check out the slide here and let me know how you think of social media.
