The Distortion party-festival in Copenhagen is a street based party-festival which in 10 years has developed from 400 visitors in year 2000 to 40,000 visitors this year. But what does that have to do with Social Media?
Distortion is very much similar to successful Social Media campaigns. What Distortion does is that it creates a space for people to discover and create. Distortion is not one party, it is 100 “private” parties organized under the name Distortion. The parties are moving out on the streets, people can bring their own booze and no one tells you where to stay or go. Small new parties are building on the go, and it seems like nothing is controlled. But in fact everything is organized. The product (music, parties etc.) is amazing and the atmosphere is ecstatic. The Social Media expert might get my point, but anyway, let me enlighten you.
Building success is about understanding people’s needs – both regarding Social Media and real life. It’s about making people feel good and giving them a reason to participate. Distortion boss Thomas Fleurquin says: “The way to discover music at Distortion is by fooling around in happiness and suddenly you hear the most crazy act, which makes you freak out”. It’s the beauty of Distortion, and it’s the beauty of Social media. The fooling around is important on social media. That’s what people do. They fool around on Facebook, blogs etc. and it’s about creating that crazy act that makes people freak out.
Like I said, it seems like Distortion is out of control but still organized. That’s how you want to work with Social Media, that’s one step on the road of getting success. Stop planning how to gain control and start wondering how to organize a space for people where they can explore, get involved and discover your crazy act. That’s the way to create the biggest Social Media party.
