No doubt that Facebook is stealing the picture when it comes to changing platform, layout or adding new features.

The professional network Linkedin has been without change for almost 2-3 years, but during the last 6 months, a number of new features have been added.

A lot of people use Linkedin as a rollerdex – a tool to keep track of your contacts – but with the new features, you can create greater value than that.

Twitter integration

The change that caught the most attention was the integration with Twitter, you can now add your Twitter profile to your Linkedin profile and tweet your Linkedin updates to your Twitter profile.

It also is connected the other way around to let all your tweets go into your Linkedin status updates or choose the feature of only doing this when your write ‘#in’ in your tweet.

The integration is great – but remember there is a great difference between the micro blogging network Twitter and the static updating system at Linkedin – it does not make sense to update all your tweets in LinkedIn and it ticks people off to see the same three persons filling out their stream.

Recently some new features have been added.

Status updates with links

For a while it has been possible to comment on each other’s status lines and now it’s possible to attach a link. This means that you can present something you want to share with more information than the 140 characters you are allowed to, without having to use a URL-shortener giving no indications of where you get directed to.

Also, LinkedIn has now added the follow function known from Twitter, so that you can follow companies. Following companies you find interesting can bring you relevant updates on new hires, people leaving the company etc.

Search a company and you will see the picture below, with a follow function.

In your feed you will see recent information from the companies you are following:

Applications to your profile

During the last year, besides adding the Twitter collaboration, LinkedIn has opened up for a number of third-party applications. Some of these are:

• Integration of Slideshare – sharing presentation you have submitted to your Slideshare account:

• Integration of your blog, not all blog platforms will work, but WordPress works fine:

Another recommendable app to check out is the Amazon reading list. It gives you a great tool to share your recommendations on books, and to discover new interesting titles among your connections.

The LinkedIn platform is getting stronger and stronger. It’s no longer just a rollerdex but it’s becoming increasingly valuable for your personal professional use – I strongly recommend you to rediscover Linkedin.
