The influence you can get by starting a simple facebook page grows everyday. More and more companies, also media companies, are putting an ear to the ground, listing to what the people want – and frankly it does makes sense to do, make or sell the things people want. It’s nothing new, it’s just good old demand and supply management.
After Betty White (probably best known from the show Golden Girls), aired in a fun super bowl commercial for Snickers, a fan put up a page “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!”
In less than a month, the page got more than 500,000 fans. This gained the attention of Lorne Michaels, executive producer of Saturday Night Live and on May 8th Betty White is going to host SNL.
The New Petition
It seems that the more Facebook becomes a part of our regular social life, old terms and ways of doing things gets turned into new ones – this is the new petition tool – and it’s so much easier than going from door to door
Three things I really like:
- The name the fan gave the Facebook page – not “We want…” or “100,000 for” but actually being nice about it – asking politely and even with a “please”.
- The fact that Lorne Michael listens. It seems like an easy decision, but seriously – it’s more common that companies ignore the polite asking from fans, users, consumers or what we call ourselves. Thanks Lorne!
- Betty White on SNL – growing up with Betty, no doubt that I am looking forward to the show. Thank you to the fan who got that idea!
If you have some examples of how Facebook Pages have affected the outcome in a positive product development way – like this one (oh yes – SNL is a product), please share them with us all.
