Remember the suicide network Seppukoo? We wrote a couple of blog posts about it’s pursuit to make Facebook users commit virtual suicide and about Facebook’s attempt to stop this by threatening to drag the site to court. Well now yet another suicide site has occurred: The Web 2.0 Suicide Machine.

The Web 2.0 Suicide Machine offers addicted social media users or users who have just had enough a possible New Year’s resolution: commit online suicide – and get your actual life back. Just provide your login details for the social networks you use and the Suicide Machine will permanently change your log in details so that you can never log in again. Again Facebook is not thrilled about the idea of loosing accounts, which is why they have banned IP addresses used by the Web Suicide Machine. When trying to enter the Suicide Machine’s website a popup message reads:
“You are trying to access Facebook from an IP (Internet Protocol) address that has been associated with abusive behaviour.”

The not-so-subtle message Facebook is sending with its aggressive response to both the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine and Seppukoo.com is that they’re scared of their users committing online suicide en masse. Even though the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine and Seppukoo.com are never realistically going to affect Facebook’s active user count, they reflect growing discontent amongst many users of online social networks. The services might make some Facebook users realise that they’re addicted to the network or that they want to spend their time and energy away from the screen – in real life.
There’s no doubt that one of today’s trends is switching off, pulling out the plug and returning to values that really matter, but I really doubt that the suicide machines will have a big impact on Facebook’s active account number. If anything they just make us stop and think about where we focus our precious time and energy. And when has stopping and thinking ever been a bad idea?

and maybe it will make Facebook and the other networks spend some time making their services more integrateable into real life, so you no longer feel it as such a choice between the two..
