I recently discovered the group RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE FOR CHRISTMAS NO.1 in my Facebook feed. Taking a closer look at it, it shows that a growing number of people have decided to fight against X-Factor Simon Cowell’s produced album ‘Christmas Songs’. In an attempt to prevent the album from reaching number one in the UK single charts, the group encourages Facebook users to buy the classic 1992 Rage Against the Machine song ’Killing in the Name’ on iTunes. The page now has 120,131 fans.
The first post on the Facebook Page read “Fed up of Simon Cowell’s latest karaoke act being Christmas No. 1? Me too … So who’s up for a mass-purchase of the track ‘KILLING IN THE NAME’ from December 13th … as a protest to the X Factor monotony?”
According to Freshbusinessthinking.com the effect of the Facebook Page has been impressive: ’Killing in the Name’ is now high up in the UK charts again, 17 years after it’s first release. People all over the UK have bought the single and music stores have started ordering the single in time for Christmas.

Theofficialcharts.com show that the Rage Against the Machine single has now reached number 80 on the UK single chart so there is still a long way to go. It has already made it all the way to the top on iTunes in the UK, though.
The case shows how social media can create a significant impact on the ‘real world’ through viral spread.
