Watch My New Viral Film

Viral marketing is the ‘new’, hot phrase. Everybody wants to be viral and we’re often asked how you make a viral film and lately I’ve stumbled upon the words: “See my new viral film” a couple of times to much.

In my opinion ‘viral’ is a term used for something that spreads through and by a lot of people. It’s not always films; it can be ideas, pictures, statements etc. too.

You can’t make a viral film. You can strive to make a film that hopefully – with the right content or seeding goes viral. So saying “watch my new viral film” is just plain wrong when launching a film that you hope has got viral potential. No one can be sure that a film goes viral.

‘Oh, but if we seed it, it will’. No, not if it’s not good enough or if people don’t want to share it with each other.

‘But my film got 300.000 views because it was shown on this big site’. That’s not viral. That’s just getting a lot of views from one source, which means that it’s just broadcasting. That’s push and not pull.

If you go to Viralvideochart.com you will see that they don’t rate the films based on how many views they’ve had. The videos are rated on how many people have tweeted or written about them. In short the videos are rated according to how much people share them with each other.

So in theory you can call a film viral even if it has had less than 10.000 views. It’s not about the number of views. It’s all about sharing.

Give your comment on the viral thing. Do you agree or do you think I am way off?
