GoogleTwitter

Twitter has been looking for a business model and even though they’ve experienced rapidly growth in 2009, they’re still with their about 50 million users way behind other social media giants like Facebook and YouTube and they also still need to find the revenue stream.

On the 12th of December Twitter announced a sealed deal with the search engines Google and Microsoft’s Bing. A deal that certainly increases the potential of both growth in users and money.

The most interesting thing for me right now is looking at the potential increase of users.

Goggle has (on the .com) launched a real time search of what you are searching.

A box appears as showed below making a continuing real time search for that word you are searching for.
I tried to search for COP15 and got a continuing stream of “news” containing the word COP15.

Google-Twitter
This feature was actually one of the reasons I fell in love with using Twitter.
It’s the same feature that brings me relevant news on topics via Twitter on my desktop application TweetDeck.
I have about 10 different subjects or words I like to monitor and have a news feed of these words I can drop in and out off supplying me with the latest news on subjects of interest to me.

About a week ago someone asked out loud in the office: ‘I just saw somebody in my Facebook feed trash talk Hornsleth (Danish artist), anybody know what he’s done?’
The guy next to me went on Google trying to find the answer, but I typed ‘Hornsleth’ into TweetDeck. I had the answer in less than 2 minutes. At the same time, the guy next to me was still fumbling around with articles on the first page of Google dated back to 2006 ☺
What I wanted to show with the above mentioned example is that this is not only a good deal for Twitter, it’s a must have feature for search engines wanting to keep up with the promise of delivering the most relevant information at the right time.

2010 is going to be the year for Twitter. That is at least what the founders of Twitter think. With this deal I think they have moved a whole lot closer to making that thought come true -  when more people through their use of Google see the potential of Twitter.

I think there are  dozens of reasons why this is very exciting,  what it can and will be used for, and how it will change a lot of things. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
