Today, December 1st, is World AIDS Day so we thought we’d to show you how this day is marked in social media. Joinred, Twitter and Nike have come up with a really good idea on how to create awareness about AIDS and World AIDS Day by turning the social media platforms red – quite literally.

On Facebook and Twitter joinred are encouraging users to turn the networks red to spread awareness about World Aids Day. With the hashtag #red your tweet goes red. You can also change your colour settings to red or make your background red to spread the colour on Twitter or make your Facebook profile picture red to spread the colour there. Why red?: It’s the color of an emergency. AIDS is a preventable and treatable disease yet 33 million people in the world have HIV. 22 million of whom live in Africa.

Because of this campaign the number one trending topic on Twitter is now #red and 4/10 of the treding topics are related to AIDS and World AIDS Day.
