For those few people that might not know, this December in Copenhagen, Denmark, the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 (also known as COP15) will take place. Delegates to the conference are set to negotiate the successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

We at Mindjumpers, have been waiting in excitement to see how COP15 were going to use Social Media to bring awareness to this important event. They have for a while been using Twitter and have at the moment more than 5.500 followers. Two days ago they launched a new campaign on their YouTube Channel and a landing page on Google earth.

The YouTube Channel feature a fantastic introduction film, watch it and read on – it will get you in the spirit of saving our earth.

The YouTube channel also features three other films, one with the Primeminister of Denmark, one with Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary UNFCCC (this one is in a bad quality) and one with HRH the Crown Prince of Denmark (I have seen him more exited before, but it’s fun to here him talk about YouTube – Royalty 2.0).

Now the best thing about it all, is that they have made an involving competition “Submityour video on climate change now. The two winners will be selected by public voting on YouTube from Nov 6-30.” By also letting the public decide the winner, they are using the media very well – love it.

What can I win? “Two trips to Copenhagen during the conference for 4 days with 1 friend, flight and hotel included.
Visit the Conference Center and be personally present at the COP15 CNN/YouTube Debate, which will be aired globally (prize provided by MFA).”
– The last part is a true ‘Identification / Badge’ price – well thought out and in great alignment with the “Brand” and Campaign. But not only the winner gets the ‘Identification / Badge’ price – you can get a part of it by only submitting – you don´t have to win: At the CNN/YouTube Debate: You may be aired in front of world-leaders and decision makers in this global TV debate on climate change (Dec 15).
In Copenhagen: All approved submissions will be screened on an Earth Globe in the city center and in the conference center to make your voice heard (Dec. 7-18).”

Identification / Badge, what the hell is he talking about!? Identification is one of the most powerfull things of all the words describing how and why people are using social media. We as humans have always been building our ‘offline’ identification, ‘what things do I want other people to identify me with?’ ‘Am I the class clown, the sports jock, the kind lover, the go giver, the strong silent type?’ With online social media – we as humans have been taking the creation of our identity to the next level – just take a look at your friends status updates, bet you can find the funny guy, the party girl, the guy who always updates everybody on his running game, the mother that is so proud of her family or the career guy – who is always on work. Social Media gives us the possibility to strengthen what we want to identify us with towards more people, more often than ever.

So when a ‘brand’ / organization like COP15 puts up ‘Badges’ like ‘Be creative – make your own video’, ‘Care about the Climate – do a difference’, ‘Get you Voice heard – let people see you’, they have in my oppinion tapped into one of the important things that drives campaigns on Social Media. Identification is just one of the important things to remember when engaging on social media, but its one of the important ones.

Google earth

Last note on the campaign from COP15 for now is about their Google Earth thing – it’s nice, it’s cool, you have to install Google Earth, which makes it a bit complicated – I don’t see the Google Earth part bringing anything to the campaign besides being a nice cool feature, but check it out here.Similar Posts:
