I admit it – I’m an old fashioned guy!
I didn’t grow up digitally. When I grew up I got my knowledge from plain ordinary books; you know a pile of paper with a cover and a back to hold the paper together.
I have always read a lot and in my younger days some might have called me a book worm. I mostly read what interested me at the time – all from sci-fi, detectives and adventures to books about horses (don’t tell anybody about the horses). I guess I have always been reading more fiction (I am a sucker for a good story) than non fiction.
Combining my interests for books with a good old collectors gene makes me a sucker for buying way more books than I can ever get around to reading. In the last year my choice of reading has been anything with social media, marketing, branding, the history of the web, the generation Y etc. so a recent tripe to London ended with me hauling home 25 books or about 15 kg of books.
Now what does all this have to do with the title of this post, ‘How Much Are You Worth on Facebook?’ Simple. Apparently it’s not so easy to sell books these days, so brilliant new techniques must be used my young Padowan.
Viral Loop is a new book by Adam L. Penenberg. It’s subtitle is: ‘From Facebook to Twitter, How Today’s Smartest businesses Grow Themselves’.
How do you market a book? Well, Facebook is popular – lets make a Facebook app in alignment with the content of the book: The ‘Viral Loop – what are your friends on Facebook worth’ app.
About the app written by Adam in an article for Fast Company, ‘Inspired by my book of the same name, it tells you what you are worth—in dollars—to Facebook, based on your level of activity, the activity level of your friends, your influence, all of this combined with Facebook’s current valuation. What’s more, the app can also tell you what your friends are worth.’
The above mentioned article on Facebook features a top list, which the author will update as the app spreads. Right now the celeb list is topped by (no surprise) Michael Jackson, followed by Mr. Obama, Vin Diesel and the sizzling Megan Fox, God him- or herself has to settle as number ten.
I had to try the app to see what I’m worth on Facebook. The result is $208,40. Subtracting the approximately $20 I now have to spend on buying the book (of course I have to buy that book) I am worth a couple of bottles of good red wine – not a whole lot :)
