Ok, so we all remember how back in the days, the way to propose was to ask the girls parents for her hand in marriage (ok baaaack, waaaaaay back in Jane Austen’s days), then an era passed, and the man proposed directly to the girl, got down on one knee, looked into the eyes of his beloved, and asked her the 4 words that would change his life, “will you marry me?” Then came another era, where couples living together finally said “We’ve lived together for some time, and this works out pretty good, should we get married?” Leading to a much more direct, mutual question, where both parties were equal, and on the same ground. We’ve all seen films or experienced in real life in which a guy proposes to his girlfriend during a football match on the big screen, on tv, in front of his family/friends or in front of an unknown audience. Then, just now, another new phenomenal era has kicked in, where proposals are being made on Twitter.
It is fascinating how the relation between social life on the internet and the ‘real’ life is changing, interacting, and how one has started to become a substitute for the other. Some times it is almost like an illusion. How so? Look at the amount of your friends on facebook, and compare them to the people you see/know/have phone numbers for in real life. In any case, not surprisingly, the way people interact with one another is completely changing, and the marriage proposal scenario underlines the lack of need for direct communication, and emphasises the need to be heard and to feel a sense of ‘wholeness’. The marriage proposal scenario is a perfect example of how social media is changing us, who we are, and how we interact with each other in the real world through use of social media. Social media is the new reality. Live it, and love it!
P.s This is not the first twitter proposal to have taken place!
