Since Drew Olanoff was diagnosed with cancer in May 2009, he has blamed everything on his cancer – like losing his keys or misplacing his wallet – and who wouldn’t? Cancer is one of the most evil things I can think of. But for Drew, being diagnosed with cancer became an opportunity to raise awareness about beating it, “because you have to beat up on cancer to win”.
He decided to use the possibilities social media give and created a campaign that encourages people to blow off steam by blaming his cancer for bad things in their lives. When people blame Drew’s cancer using the hashtag #BlameDrewsCancer on Twitter, the Tweet will show up on a sign at blamedrewscancer.com.
More than 19,000 things have been blamed on Drew’s cancer so far, and when he beats his cancer (and I know he will), Drew hopes to have sponsors donate a dollar for every participant to Livestrong. The donations are already coming in and so far people have donated $962. Drew also has a blog on which he tells about being diagnosed with cancer and a Twitter account (@DrewsCancer) where followers can receive updates on how he’s doing.
From now on if something goes wrong in my life I’m going to #BlameDrewsCancer.
