(added after posting) A lot of people have been visiting this post – and if you want the quick way of getting your own name, here it is: Login to facebook – then change your URL to http://facebook.com/username – then a picture will appear with different choices for your name.
(start of the original post)
What, in a while has been possible for big companies with at direct contact to Facebook, will now be possible for You and me.
From Saturday the 13th of June at 06.01 am (Danish time) (yes it’s quite early) you will have a chance to get your own username for your facebook profile or the pages you are administrating.
Username/vanity url/Facebook url simply means that:
Instead of this url for my personal profile: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=734428508&ref=name, I can have this url: http://www.facebook.com/Jonasklitnielsen
Or for our Mindjumpers page on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/MINDJUMPERS/55289521572?ref=ts we can have this url: http://www.facebook.com/MINDJUMPERS
But with 200 million users on Facebook there is definitely going to be a rush to get your right username – there can only be one http://www.facebook.com/larslarsen
Of course Facebook has put up some rules so that people creating pages or profiles within the next couple of days can’t get usernames. This is to prevent a gold rush of getting the right usernames, which sounds like a pretty good idea.
Why is it so interesting to get your own username?
I think the great thing about it is all in the external (outside Facebook) communication of your Facebook profile or page – and for most parts the latter – the Facebook page – is the most relevant one.
Just think of the possibilities of communicating your Facebook page in the end of your newsletter, email, on billboards, TV spots etc. – it will make it a whole lot easier to communicate Facebook.com/Netto than http://www.facebook.com/pages/NETTO/13808707023?si
You can see more explained by Facebook on their blog here:
We will follow this closely and write a follow up next week after the launch.
