On June 6th it became possible for you and me to get a vanity url (also called username) on Facebook, which makes it a lot easier to tell people how to find you on Facebook. My own username is facebook.com/JonasN.
About 3 million people have chosen to change their username so, which means that there are still 197 million people on Facebook without, and no doubt that if you don’t use Facebook a lot, you probably don’t need to change.
On June 6th it also became possible to get a username for your page, but only if your page had a thousand fans as a minimum on May 31st , which meant that all the bigger brands changed their usernames. But for a lot of small business or brands that have just started using the Facebook page, this was not possible until today.
Facebook promised that everybody with a page with more than 25 fans would have a chance to get their own username by June 28th, and though it never worked for me on the 28th, it did this morning on the 29th of June.
So now you can find Mindjumpers on facebook.com/mindjumpers or the campaign we are working on right now at facebook.com/Ido30.
So why is this interesting? It will make communication outside Facebook much smoother and easier. In our email signature we can now write: “Get the latest news about social media from sources all over the world on http://facebook.com/mindjumpers”, or simply facebook.com/mindjumpers on our business cards.
For the I do 30 campaign instead of just writing “Join us on Facebook” on banners or t-shirts making people seach for us, we can now communicate “Join us on facebook.com/Ido30”
All this is of course only interesting if you have decided to actually use the world’s largest social network in one way or another for your business.
