Michael Pollitt has written an excellent article on guardian.co.uk about how some companies are promoting themselves by commenting on blogs for free, and how these companies differentiate themselves which can be seen through their methods, strategy and marketing style.
21m spam comments a day are tracked by the blogging protection system from Automatic, Akismet. When companies comment on blogs by leaving comments, words or links, advertising themselves without the traditional use of Google Adwords, they advertise for free, ensuring a higher rank in search engines. This type of commenting, also known as link spamming, ensures a higher ranking when using a search engine, and allows companies to avoid paying the traditional Adwords fee.

Expert on search engine optimisation (SEO) Jason Duke doesn’t think the link spamming pays off in the long run, although it may give a higher rank in search engines for a while. Link-building techniques however, are an integral part of search marketing strategy says Lauren Hopwood.
Clever thinking and linking through relevance is the way forward rather than spamming through blog lists. It’s about a clear marketing strategy, targeting, focusing and hitting the bulls-eye, not throwing all the net out to catch as many fish as possible.
